Social media and Covid-19

We never thought we would use the terms “social media” and “a global pandemic” like Covid-19 in the same sentence but here we are.

But then, it’s 2020 and let’s face it, there’s not much that can surprise us anymore.

It’s brought its challenges. In fact, it’s brought us the biggest business rollercoaster of all time but if there’s one big positive to it all, it’s that so many businesses have realised the importance of social media in Covid times.

As a social media marketing agency, it’s our job to tell you how important it is to be present online but boy it is now more important than ever.

Now, we can’t imagine that there are many businesses still sat on the fence about this.  If you are; if you still doubt the need for social media, then please just close this page down. We really can’t help you.

But, if you have finally reached the conclusion that it could actually help your business, then stay with us because we are going to share some great tips on how to use social media to your advantage during Covid-19.

This is an industry that changes quickly but the mindset around it has dramatically changed, even in the last 8 months.

Before we share our tips, let us take you back to when it all began.

Remember good old Boris making that address to the nation, telling us all to work from home and don’t leave the house unless there is a good reason.

The screams and cries of businesses were heard around the country and even now, as we go into our second lockdown, the fear is real.

But the point we want to make is that when Covid-19 first impacted us, social media was like a ghost town. Businesses were genuinely scared to post anything because they didn’t want to come across as insensitive.

You had a divide. There were businesses that were still thriving during the crisis but didn’t want to brag and then on the other end of the scale, there were businesses that were severely struggling but didn’t want people to know.

We had many conversations where the question was ‘What should I post? I don’t want to sell right now”

Now, let’s just take that in for moment. ‘I don’t want to sell right now’. If ever there was a time to sell, it’s now. You need that sale!!!

But, in reality, we had to be careful. We couldn’t go all out with the sales pitches when half the country was facing the prospect of losing their job.

So, we saw many businesses taking a back step on social media and as a result, just disappeared.

Think about that. You can’t leave the house for meetings, there was no networking (at the start) and now you’ve dumped your online presence. Thanks for nothing Covid!

But the smart ones stayed present. They didn’t disappear. In fact, they increased their online presence and something amazing happened…they thrived!

We talk a lot about the type of content you should go out with on social media and Covid-19 didn’t change our perspective. In fact, it re-enforced it.

You see, we would never tell you to fill your pages with a sales pitch. Even in the healthiest of business times. That’s just not how to sell online.

We’ve talked many times about social selling, storytelling and showing your followers how to do your job so they don’t need you and there is never a better time to do that than during a global pandemic.

So, as we enter a second wave, let’s make sure you’re getting it right from the start.

Our tips for social media during Covid-19

 

1 – Don’t go quiet

Reducing your social media presence is the last thing you should do. In fact, you should increase it. A consistent message is exactly what your followers need right now.

2 – Re-assess your target audience

We always recommend you conduct a target audience analysis regularly as things change but now more than ever. Look at your current audience and ask yourself if these are the people who are most likely to need you right now. If not, change it.

3 – Take time out to plan

Your priority during Covid-19 is to stay afloat so your time needs to be spent firmly in your business. Don’t waste it by having to come up with content every day. Set aside an hour a week and plan your social media. Then schedule it. You’re not going out and about right now so no need to worry about ‘on the spot selfies’. If you want an easy and cost-effective way to schedule to the four main social media platforms, upgrading to Canva pro is a great option.

4 – Write your content from your audiences’ perspective…not yours!

Put yourself in your followers’ shoes. What do you want to read right now? If it’s not what you’re writing, then change it.

5 – Show them how to do your job so they don’t need you

Don’t be afraid of this. What people need at this moment in time is help and support. They are pinching the pennies and aren’t likely to spend a fortune with you, but they will watch you if you help them out. Share valuable insights that will help to keep them going whilst they can’t afford to buy. When Covid-19 is over, they will remember you and you will reap the rewards.

So, what type of content should you be posting?

 

Simple! It’s all about your audience. Examples of content are;

  • How to videos
  • FAQ’S
  • Question of the week
  • Top tips blogs
  • Meet the team
  • Testimonials
  • Your business story
  • How you’ve changed during Covid-19
  • Share your struggles
  • Ask for advice and opinions
  • Motivational quotes and inspirational stories
  • Product/service of the week (How could it help? Not, here’s what we sell)
  • National/international days
  • Funny quotes or memes
  • Fun facts about you or your team

The list is endless, but you’ll note there are few sales pitches. By showing your support and empathy, you will come out as a winner.
